Recently, Yuchai Marine Power Co., Ltd. successfully won the world's first orders for Wärtsilä two-stroke low-pressure dual-fuel marine engines.
On March 27th, the company signed a purchase contract with Wärtsilä Switzerland Ltd. in Shanghai. A total of 5 5RT-flex50 DF machines were signed. The first 5RT-flex50 DF machine was delivered at the end of February 2015 and will be used in a new LNG ship of Zhejiang Huaxiang Shipping Co., Ltd.
Wärtsilä launched a two-stroke engine low-pressure dual-fuel technology in November last year. Research shows that Wärtsilä low-pressure dual-fuel engines can reduce capital expenditure by 15%-20% compared to other technologies. In terms of operating expenses, low-pressure dual-fuel engines operate in gas mode over all load ranges, including no-load and handling, which can significantly reduce costs. In addition, Wärtsilä's low-pressure dual-fuel technology has an important advantage in that it can operate stably with gas throughout the entire load range without switching to the diesel fuel mode. It can operate in gas mode without the need to install an exhaust gas cleaning system. The advantages of IMO's three-level emission standards are also particularly prominent. The technology is also simple and reliable, with the most streamlined components to provide the most economical gas supply system and other advantages. The engine uses a low-pressure gas treatment system with a maximum pressure of 16 bar and does not require an additional external engine compressor to avoid additional loads.
The application of the new two-stroke low-pressure dual-fuel engine allows LNG fuel to be used in almost all types of ships. The RT-flex50DF engine is the first in a series of two-stroke low-pressure dual-fuel engines.
