France's Enertime has introduced a new waste heat recovery system, which promises to have good low-temperature heat source reliability.
It is reported that the system developed by the company is called the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC), which is used for waste heat recovery and can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10%. As a steam power cycle, the ORC system uses waste heat to evaporate fluid, and the generated steam is charged into the conduit, generating mechanical energy, and generating electricity using a generator. The fluid is then concentrated and pumped into the closed loop by the pump. The biggest difference between ORC and steam cycle is the use of organic fluids with lower boiling points, so low temperature heat sources can be used.
The fluid used by Enertime is HFC-245fa, which is produced all over the world and is commonly used in refrigerants. The low temperature at which the ORC system operates is between about 150 ° C for the heat source and 30 ° C for the cold source, with an efficiency of about 12%, preferably 23%.
Depending on the heat, Enertime's ORC system can generate 500 kW to 1 MW of electricity. The heat source can be a two-stroke, four-stroke, dual-fuel engine or an auxiliary machine. It is specifically designed for use in the marine environment, including shipyards, shipowners and Classification society. It should be pointed out that the waste heat generated by natural gas combustion is usually cooled to a low temperature, so the waste heat recovery of LNG powered ships is potentially more efficient.
Enertime conducted research on a new ferry. The ferry is powered by four dual-fuel engines and electric propulsion, with a total power of approximately 40 MW, and waste heat is used to generate 1-7 MW of steam. Enertime recommends using an ORC unit to recover 4 MW of heat and generate approximately 700 kW of electricity. The ORC unit is 7.5 meters long, 2.5 meters wide and 4 meters high, with a total weight of about 25 tons. It is calculated for 4000 hours per year and the investment recovery period is 5-6 years.
Enertime is actively seeking a partner to promote in the marine industry.
