Honeywell (NYSE: HON) recently announced that its new production facility in Geismar, Louisiana, has been officially put into commercial operation to meet the growing global demand for new generation automotive air conditioning refrigerants. Demand. After production, the site will become the world's largest HFO-1234yf refrigerant production base, and the product will be sold under the trade name Solstice® yf.
The industry-winning Solstice yf was developed by Honeywell's research team to replace the most widely used R-134a refrigerant in the automotive industry. Solstice yf's global warming potential (GWP) is less than 1, lower than carbon dioxide, and is 99.9% lower than R-134a refrigerant with a global warming potential of 1300. In fact, many governments and industries have been considering the phase-out of R-134a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants since the early 2000s.
“The development of Solstice yf refrigerant is a breakthrough innovation that will help the automotive industry transition to more environmentally friendly technologies while ensuring superior performance.†Vice President and General Manager, Honeywell Fluorine Products Manager Ken Gayer said, "Honeywell has continued to invest in product development for more than a decade and strongly supports the team to develop new alternatives to meet the market's need to accelerate the phase-out of HFC products. Solstice Yf is one of the best solutions available today to meet the safety requirements of its intended use and to address fuel efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions."
Honeywell has invested heavily in the construction of the Geisma production base, creating hundreds of long-term, high-value, sustainable employment opportunities locally, increasing the number of base employees by more than 20% and providing local Nearly 1,400 job-related jobs. With this investment, the Gassma plant has become one of Honeywell's most advanced production facilities, with a range of processes and automation technologies including Honeywell's interconnected plant technology.
Honeywell has also established a central hub in Louisiana for the production of a new generation of Solstice products, including Solstice yf. With the support of a comprehensive incentive program led by the local economic development agency, Honeywell has invested heavily in manufacturing plants across Louisiana.
Rick Winick, Honeywell Automotive Refrigerant Business Director, said: "The new Geisma production site will be the main source of Solstice yf for Honeywell's global automotive customer base. Our products have been Automotive users in the US and Europe are widely used. As capacity expands, our products will be sold to more countries and regions, helping them transition to the next generation of more environmentally friendly automotive air conditioning refrigerants."
Today, HFO-1234yf is safely used in more than 20 million vehicles worldwide. By the end of 2017, this number is expected to exceed 40 million. In the automotive industry, almost every car manufacturer plans to use at least one US model to use HFO-1234yf refrigerant to achieve many environmental benefits. The global use of this refrigerant to reduce greenhouse gases is equivalent to permanently reducing more than 30 million vehicles on the road.
Honeywell is a global leader in the development, manufacture and supply of refrigerants. Its Solstice® and Genetron® brand refrigerants are sold worldwide and are used in refrigeration, construction and automotive air conditioning. Honeywell has partnered with its suppliers to develop a $900 million investment in the development and production of new hydrofluoroolefin (HFO) technology.
