Analysts from CMAI, an American-based consulting firm headquartered in Houston, pointed out that the current global soda ash market demand is 47 million tons/year, and the global soda ash market demand in the next five years will grow at an average annual rate of 4%. The new demand will come mainly from China. Last year, the world's soda ash market grew by 32% from China, and it is expected that the growth rate of China's soda ash market will reach an annual average of 7.8% in the next five years.
Due to the slowdown in capacity expansion worldwide, the soaring demand for soda ash in China has led to tight supply in the global market. At the same time, the strong growth in demand from Central Europe and the Middle East has also aggravated the global supply shortage. Globally, soda ash is mainly used in the production of float glass.
It is understood that the good performance of float glass will promote the growth of demand. Even in developed countries, the prospect of float glass is still promising. Demand for float glass in some emerging regions, especially China, will still be in a period of rapid growth. It is predicted that between 2006 and 2011, the global demand for the float glass market will grow at an average annual rate of 5.9%. At the same time, the demand growth of the Chinese market will reach an annual average of 10.4%.
Market analysts believe that the global supply of soda ash will be tight throughout 2008. Although China has accelerated the pace of energy expansion, it is still not enough to meet the increase in its demand. It is said that the main energy expansion project in the global soda ash industry recently is EtiSoda's new 1 million tons/year plant in Beypazari, Turkey. Half of the production capacity of the plant will be put into operation by the end of this year. It is unlikely that other capacity expansion projects will have a major impact on the global soda ash market. In addition, Solvay is expanding capacity of the Bulgarian Devnya soda ash plant, and is expected to add 300,000 tons/year of capacity; and Ciech is carrying out de-bottlenecking of the soda ash plant located in Govora, Romania, and is expected to increase by 2009. 250,000 tons/year of production capacity.
According to market sources, global soda ash prices are rising, partly due to supply shortages and also by the increase in ocean freight rates. In the US market, the soda ash price in 2008 has risen to 125-155 US$/tonne (FOB), while the spot price for soda ash in the Asian market is 270-330 US$/tonne (CFR).
At present, some companies are trying to improve their right to speak in the global market, soda industry is still in the active period of mergers and acquisitions. Tata Chemicals acquired Brunner Mond in 2006, which enabled the company to have a production base in Europe; Ciech became the second largest soda ash producer in Europe after acquiring Sodawerk Stasfurt in November 2007; India's Nirma Corp. from a private equity company at the end of 2007 SunCapital Partners acquired Searles Valley Minerals.
