COSCO and Tsinghua University successfully developed the "Sea Shield" ballast water system

It is reported that COSCO Shipbuilding Industry Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of COSCO Group, and Tsinghua University have jointly developed the modular ballast water treatment system “BLUE OCEAN SHIELD BWTS”, which uses physical filtration to remove more than 50 microns of water from water. Body and killing organisms less than 50 microns in water by ultraviolet radiation. This system is based on the requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships' Ballast Water and Sediments in 2004. It is designed and developed in consideration of international regulations, ship technology programs and ecological protection. The Convention requires bioavailability and ecological safety indicators for ship's pressurized water discharge.
The filter used in the system has obtained national patents, participated in the national “Eleventh Five-Year” major scientific and technological achievements exhibition, and won the honor of 2011 national key new products. The system has passed the approval of IMO and the type approval of China CCS, and is actively applying for the certificate of Norwegian DNV and USCG. The technology is mature, safe, stable and green. It will be installed in nearly 20 new COSCO shipbuildings in 2012.
