NREL multi-junction battery for high efficiency concentrating photovoltaic system

The system, called the Amonix 7700 concentrating photovoltaic solar power producer, uses efficient multi-hub photovoltaic cells developed by NREL scientists. These batteries are made without the use of conventional silicon, using indium gallium arsenide and gallium phosphide, which converts 41.6% of the sunlight they absorb into electricity under laboratory conditions.

Although the performance of real-life batteries is usually not as good as that under laboratory conditions, these batteries produced for Amonix 7700 can achieve 31% conversion efficiency at the component level and 26% conversion efficiency at the system level. .

According to NREL, the 31% and 26% ratios are the highest conversion efficiencies achieved by centralized photovoltaic systems (CPV), which allows the Amonix 7700 system to achieve more than any system currently available in the solar world. Units of acre of energy."

The 7700 system uses an acrylic Fresnel lens that converges up to 500 times the usual level and directs it to more than 7,560 pivot photovoltaic cells. A six square inch silicon wafer for a conventional solar panel can produce about 2.5 watts of power, while in the 7700 system, the same size wafer is cut into hundreds of cells and then paired with Fresnel lens lenses. Produce more than 1500 watts of electricity. This reduces the need for a battery area by 500 times.

The 20-unit Amonix 7700 only covers 5 acres of land and can produce more than 1 megawatt of rated power, which is equivalent to supplying enough power to more than 750 homes. A 53 kW 7700 system has a dual-axis tracker that tracks sunlight during the day and reconfigures to protect the panel in extreme wind conditions. The energy that drives the tracker is only 1% of the system's output power.

The 7700 system also integrates wafer, battery and configuration into a single unit, which saves costs. This also makes it easy to transport and quick to install.

Amonix has 15 years of experience in developing CPV systems, and NREL has more than 30 years of R&D experience in photovoltaic technology. The partnership combines efficient multi-hub solar cells with Amonix's CPV system, which is completed through a “High-Performance Photovoltaic Project” funded by the US Department of Energy's Solar Technology Program.
