Soon you can use traffic noise, music, songs from the football field and even your own voice to charge your phone! Scientists from the University of London's Queen Mary and Nokia have created an energy harvesting prototype (a kind of nanogenerator) that can be used to charge mobile phones using everyday background noise such as traffic, music and our own voice. The research team used the main characteristics of zinc oxide to convert energy from motion into electrical energy, in the form of nanorods, when extruding or stretching the material that generates the voltage.
Nanorods can be coated in different locations so that energy collection is quite versatile on a variety of surfaces. When this surface is squeezed or stretched, a high voltage nanorod is then produced. The nano bar vibrates and makes everyday sounds that create movements to react to our voices. Electrical contacts on both sides of the pole are then used to recover the voltage charged by the handset, according to reports.
The researchers first developed a chemical that allows them to spray nanorods, like a graffiti, a plastic sheet covered with zinc oxide. When injected into a mixture of chemicals and heated to just 90 degrees Celsius, nanorods spread over the surface. Second, gold is traditionally used as electrical contact, but the team was able to produce alternatives using inexpensive and cheerful aluminum foil. The final device generates 5 volts, which is enough to charge the phone. "Being able to work with mobile devices for a longer period of time, or relying entirely on stray energy, is an exciting concept on our side," said Dr. Joe Briscoe of the School of Engineering and Materials Sciences.
